Triple Bypass

Yesterday I rode in the Triple Bypass cycling event from Evergreen, CO to Avon. It is a one hundred and twenty mile road bike ride climbing ten thousand feet over three major passes. I felt pretty strong. I’ve heard that the Triple is a great way to get ready for Leadville. I rode with my friends Jon, Fabs, Rob and Gary. We started at 6:30 am in Evergreen and arrived about seven hours later. Friday night I stayed at my friend and co-author of my book, “To the Edge & Back,” Steve Jackson’s home in Bergen Park, close to the start line. Together Steve and I rode to the start yesterday morning at 6 am. It was a long day in the saddle and a great workout. About 3,500 riders participated in the ride. I found the section from Georgetown to Eisenhower Tunnel to be a real grind. I ran into my friend John Ruger on the way up Loveland Pass. I got to the top and realized I had a flat tire. John helped me fix it as we chatted. The descent from Vail Pass in pouring rain was brutal. My friend Bill bounced off a car in the main Vail roundabout. The car was damaged, but fortunately Bill was fine. The temps heated up once we got out of the rain and off Vail Pass. After crossing the finish line in Avon I sat in the Eagle River for about fifteen minutes to cool off and help my legs recover. I experimented with my diet and nutrition during the ride and my heart rate to find out what nutritional program and pace work well for me for Leadville. I’m starting to figure it out.
I’m recovering at home today in Aspen watching the Tour and World Cup Finals. Bummer about Lance this morning! Wednesday I’m speaking at the Colorado Hotel Associations Annual Meeting in Vail. Sunday July 18th I’ll be running in the 11th Annual Donor Dash at Washington Park in Denver and manning our CKF booth. Hope to see you there! Have a great week!
